Hanju Lee is an installation artist who explores the human inner world and relationships through materials with distinct physical qualities, including steel, glass, mother-of-pearl, thread, and light.
She brings warmth and emotional nuance to cold, solid steel by combining it with delicate materials such as light, glass, and mother-of-pearl. By bringing together contrasting qualities such as strength and fragility, weight and lightness, and the artificial and the natural within a shared space, she uses the tension and balance that emerge between them as a central visual language in her work.
Through the coexistence of materials that retain their individual differences and traces, Lee explores the complexity of human emotions, recovery, and relationships between people. Bringing warmth, emotion, and memory into cold steel is a central sensibility that runs throughout her practice.
The metalworking alleys of Mullae-dong, Seoul, form an important foundation for her practice. Through collaboration with local craftspeople and small-scale manufacturers, Lee embraces the traces left by welding, cutting, and metalworking as part of the work. In doing so, she explores the point at which her own artistic language meets skills and knowledge accumulated over many years.
